LANTANA
An excellent marriage drama spoiled by adult-only content.
Should You Watch It?
LANTANA is a powerful Australian drama that uses a missing-persons investigation to examine four married couples. Its central insight is clear: lack of trust can erode marriage and family, while a healthy home can give people a solid foundation for life.
The film builds slowly but gains power as it goes. Anthony LaPaglia is brilliant as a conflicted police detective consumed by guilt over infidelity. The story ultimately rebukes adultery and honors marriage, family, redemption, and renewed commitment.
But the film earns its −2 rating. Strong sex scenes and foul language interrupt its moral purpose, and other mature content makes it unsuitable for children and young teens. If you are a discerning adult willing to endure those elements for a serious, morally purposeful drama, it is worth the trip — adults only.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESPolice detective Leon Zat is investigating a missing person while struggling with guilt over his infidelity. His investigation draws him into the troubled lives of several married couples, including a psychiatrist and his wife, a separated couple, and young parents trying to get by with three small children.
As the investigation develops, the characters’ hidden wounds and broken trust begin to affect one another. The mystery becomes a study of marriage, loss, family, and the cost of refusing to trust.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means LANTANA is an excellent drama with substantial artistic and emotional power. The film builds slowly, gathering force as its interwoven relationships come into focus.
Anthony LaPaglia is positively brilliant as the conflicted, philandering Detective Zat. Kerry Armstrong and Barbara Hershey also deliver marvelous performances. Screenwriter Andrew Bovell and director Ray Lawrence create a powerful, heartfelt, positive denouement that gives the story’s moral themes real weight.
The Worldview
LANTANA offers a solid moral worldview with redemptive elements. It rebukes infidelity and shows how distrust can build a wall between spouses and damage an entire family. The film also presents marriage and family as sources of stability, healing, and renewed purpose.
Its moral vision is not fully Christian. The redemptive scenes would have been stronger with timely Christian or scriptural references, and the film does not explicitly ground marriage, repentance, or family restoration in God. A psychiatrist also talks disdainfully with a promiscuous homosexual patient, an element viewers should weigh carefully.
Even so, the film’s central longing for a healthy marriage and a secure family aligns with Scripture’s vision of faithful love and God’s restoring character: “You, O Lord, are our Father and our Redeemer” (Isaiah 63:16).
