INSPECTOR GADGET
A good-hearted, clean fantasy comedy with energetic effects.
Should You Watch It?
Inspector Gadget is a good-hearted movie with many positive virtues. It offers lots of good special effects, a kind-hearted hero, redemption, love, miracles, and the triumph of good over evil.
The movie’s biggest weakness is its story. The many gadget parts never quite make a whole, and the film does not move beyond its cartoon roots. Still, it is unusually clean compared with the foul and scatological humor common in many other summer offerings.
You can take your family for wholesome, effects-driven fun, especially if nostalgia is part of the appeal. Just expect a clumsy plot rather than a deeply compelling adventure.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESJohn Brown is a kind-hearted security man who wants to do good by joining the police force, though he does not initially have what it takes. After a dangerous encounter involving secret robotic research, John is rebuilt as a fantastic robot policeman: Inspector Gadget.
Now he must learn to live with his new identity, his sassy Gadgetmobile, and his niece Penny, while pursuing a villain with a mechanical replacement hand.
Is It Any Good?
Three stars means a pleasant, good-hearted movie with real entertainment value but clear limitations. The special effects are fantastic and help propel the action while providing much of the humor.
The movie also contains many positive virtues, including love, redemption, miracles, and good triumphing over evil. But the story never becomes compelling, and all the gadget parts do not seem to form a satisfying whole. The result is enjoyable cartoon-style entertainment that never fully rises above its cartoon roots.
The Worldview
The film presents a Christian worldview with some pagan elements. It celebrates kindness, bravery, love, redemption, miracles, and the triumph of good over evil. John Brown is literally brought back to life, in effect, through a miracle that includes love. Penny also helps one of the villain’s minions overcome his evil nature.
The movie’s moral direction is clear: evil can be overcome, people can be redeemed, and love matters. However, one scene seems to mock Eastern religion when a Yogi teaches Inspector Gadget to use willpower to control his robotic parts. The film’s Christian elements therefore exist alongside pagan material and broad comic treatment of religion.
At its heart, the movie longs for good to defeat evil and for people to be changed for the better. Scripture gives that hope a clear direction: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12:21).
