BADLAND
An engaging Western of justice, love, faith, and dangerous violence.
Should You Watch It?
BADLAND is a captivating Western that keeps viewers engaged. Its strong Christian, moral worldview promotes family, love, justice, faith, hope, prayer, and sacrifice. The cast, sets, and music create a convincing old Wild West atmosphere.
That moral strength comes with serious content concerns. The movie contains multiple shootouts, a character being waterboarded, a woman being beaten, six obscenities, prostitutes shown in a bar, and adults drinking whiskey. Those elements make it unsuitable for children and young teens.
If you are a discerning adult who can handle abundant violence and mature content, BADLAND offers a worthwhile story about justice, love, and faith. For family viewing with younger audiences, choose something else.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESDetective Mathias Breecher is hired to track down Confederate war criminals across the Wild West. His mission changes when he meets Sarah, a pioneer woman caring for her dying father, who has repented of his evil ways.
Mathias and Sarah grow close and fall in love. But Mathias leaves her behind to continue serving justice, pursuing dangerous criminals in towns marked by corruption, prostitution, and alcoholism.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means BADLAND is highly effective entertainment. The movie is captivating and keeps viewers engaged, with a strong cast including Kevin Makely, Mira Sorvino, Bruce Dern, Wes Studi, and Trace Adkins.
The actors convince the audience they are living in the late 1800s. The sets are fantastic, and the music gives the film an “old Wild West” feel. Together, these elements make the Western setting convincing and immersive.
The Worldview
BADLAND presents a strong Christian, moral worldview. It promotes family, love, justice, hope, prayer, faith, and sacrifice. A woman prays to God for hope in a mission. A man says he is a man of God. Another man sacrifices his safety for another person’s life and safety.
The film also presents repentance as meaningful. Sarah’s dying father has asked God for forgiveness for his past crimes, and Mathias chooses not to kill him. Alongside these themes, the story includes a town shaped by prostitution, corruption, and alcoholism.
BADLAND’s central themes of prayer, hope, justice, and sacrificial love align with biblical concerns, even as its violent Western setting presents difficult material. Scripture says, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
