In the lovely animated musical THE SWAN PRINCESS, Prince Derek and Princess Odette come to life in a saga of young lovers torn apart by a sorcerer who schemes to rule their kingdom. From the credits, the movie whirls into a fairy-tale world of kings and kingdoms where “Once upon a time …” there were two kingdoms and two little heirs, Odette and Derek, whose parents thought it would be a good idea to join the kingdoms by marriage. Regrettably, the rotten Rothbart, an evil sorcerer who has been banished from her father’s kingdom, captures the princess. Rothbart turns Odette into a swan who can only regain her human form when moonlight hits the pond where she is imprisoned. However, as soon as the moon sets — poof! — she is a swan again. Derek and a zany trio of creatures must risk their lives to save the princess.
THE SWAN PRINCESS offers a fast-paced plot, luscious dream-like scenery and incredibly beautiful music. One gets the feeling that the animators and lyricists were all having a great deal of fun creating this movie. With love triumphing over evil, the only caution is the fantasy motif replete with the sorcerer villain (the adversary) who transforms into a giant hairy bat before his demise in a final battle. The movie teaches loving others for who they are on the inside and contains exceptional music and choreography!
