A CHANCE ENCOUNTER
A sweet, thoughtful romance worth the trip for mature viewers.
Should You Watch It?
A CHANCE ENCOUNTER is a sweet, enjoyable romance built more on conversation and encouragement than physical attraction. Hal and Josie connect through poetry, music, and meaningful discussion, and the movie finds real value in two people helping each other grow creatively.
The film also offers a moral worldview, including positive references to Heaven and the afterlife. Its content concerns are real but limited: some cursing, alcohol use and brief drunkenness, kissing, and an implied couple living together.
If you enjoy gentle, dialogue-driven romances and can exercise discernment about those elements, this is worth seeing. Choose A CHANCE ENCOUNTER for mature teens and adults, not pre-teens.
The Story
NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISESHal travels to Taormina, Italy, hoping to find inspiration for his poetry. There he meets Josie Day, a famous folk singer working on another hit.
Josie encourages Hal’s writing, and the two begin spending time together. She invites him to stay at her villa for a weeklong writing retreat, where conversation and creative collaboration draw them closer. But Josie already has a boyfriend, and Hal’s feelings continue to deepen.
Is It Any Good?
Four stars means this is a highly entertaining film, and the source review calls it quirky, beautiful, sweet, and enjoyable throughout. Its appeal comes from the characters’ mental and emotional connection, along with the way writing and conversation carry the romance.
The movie is compared favorably to Before Sunrise and Once, both of which center on characters connecting deeply without making physical attraction the whole foundation. A CHANCE ENCOUNTER may be modest in scale, but its gentle approach and moral positives make it a delight for its intended audience.
The Worldview
A CHANCE ENCOUNTER presents a moral view of romance that remains chaste. It exalts encouragement, conversation, creative partnership, and emotional connection rather than treating physical attraction as the only basis for a relationship.
The film also includes positive references to Heaven and the afterlife. At the same time, its romantic situation involves a woman who already has a boyfriend, and the content guide implies that a couple is living together. Those elements complicate an otherwise positive picture of relationships.
The movie’s central idea—that people can strengthen one another through thoughtful encouragement—aligns with Scripture: “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing” (1 Thessalonians 5:11).
