JUSTIFIED star Timothy Olyphant revealed why he decided to live a “computer-free” life.
But sharing his story about going without tech on the “Smartless” podcast with Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes proved a challenge.
“I needed a computer,” Olyphant said on the podcast. He ended up using an old computer at a friend’s office. “I guess you can’t do your show if you don’t own a computer,” he quipped.
As the show hosts kept pressing, the actor shared more about what exactly his “low-tech” life looks like.
“I got like a, you know, I got a phone and I got a thing,” Olyphant said. “That’s all you gotta do.”
Bateman didn’t “buy it.”
“You don’t have, and you being an artist, you don’t have an iPad with one of those little, one of those little stylist pen thingies?” Bateman asked.

“We went…I had a…we went and got out an old desktop computer that we still have in the house and plugged it in and started it up, and they were all USB things,” Olyphant explained.
He revealed that joining the podcast was way more work than he bargained for.
“There’s a lot of sacrifices that went into this guys,” he admitted. “And don’t get me wrong, I appreciate…I’m super honored, and it is a pleasure to be here. I’m a big fan. I listen – I don’t listen – but I read the transcripts. And the show’s very good. Very, very, very good.”
Other Hollywood stars have similarly gone against the grain.
TRANSFORMERS actor Josh Duhamel moved his family to the Midwest so that his children could get their hands dirty and “come out into the woods and help dad with whatever.”
Duhamel knows that his kids would miss out on valuable life skills if they lived in Los Angeles.
“We had a tree that fell over in the winter,” he said. “We had to go out there and cut it up and put it in the back of the side-by-side and go stack the wood. He’s not doing that in Los Angeles, you know, and he sort of does it begrudgingly, but he’s going to be grateful because one day he’s going to have to do all this stuff, you know, and I think that it’s these little lessons.”
The actor admitted that Hollywood tends to “suck the soul out of you.”
“It was just a lot,” he told CBN’s Faith Wire of moving to North Dakota. “I just missed the simplicity of who I really am. I’m just not a guy who is comfortable going to red carpets, doing all the Hollywood stuff. I don’t hate it; I’m better at it now than I was, but it just took me a long time to really feel like I fit in.”
Actors like Olyphant and Duhamel show that stepping away from modern technology and the fast-paced Hollywood lifestyle allows stars to lead more grounded, simple and authentic lives.
