C-3PO is joining the Super Bowl lineup, with ESPN, Lucasfilm, Disney and the NFL announcing STAR WARS FUNDAY FOOTBALL, a live animated version of the championship game scheduled for Feb. 14, 2027.
“By blending real-time NFL data and tracking with cutting-edge animation, we’re transforming the way fans experience an NFL game,” said Michael “Spike” Szykowny, identified then as ESPN’s vice president of graphics innovation.
The new STAR WARS edition isn’t a scripted football cartoon. The players will compete in the real Super Bowl while tracking technology recreates their plays as animation, with familiar characters stepping into the action at key moments.
Actor Anthony Daniels, who played C-3PO in the original 1977 STAR WARS, will return to voice the golden droid. ESPN says characters from across the franchise will appear, with Easter eggs tucked into the presentation for viewers to spot.
The animated game will stream live on Disney+ and the ESPN App and air on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The actual championship takes place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, but ESPN has not yet announced the animated setting, the commentators or the rest of the character lineup.
Behind the character cameos sits a substantial technical operation. Sony’s Beyond Sports will combine player-tracking data from the NFL’s Next Gen Stats with Sony’s Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking to turn the live action into animated movement. The goal, according to the announcement, is to recreate every play in real time.

This will be ESPN, Disney and the NFL’s fourth animated NFL alternate telecast, following TOY STORY FUNDAY FOOTBALL in 2023, THE SIMPSONS FUNDAY FOOTBALL in 2024 and MONSTERS FUNDAY FOOTBALL in 2025. ESPN identifies the STAR WARS edition as the first animated alternate presentation of a Super Bowl.
“Our continued innovation with partners like the NFL, Beyond Sports and Disney+ showcases how technology can turn a live game into a fully immersive world, giving fans an additional way to consume sports,” said Szykowny in the 2025 announcement for MONSTERS FUNDAY FOOTBALL.
The important word for viewers is additional. Families who prefer the usual broadcast won’t have to follow animated avatars to see the game: ESPN, ABC and Disney+ will carry the traditional presentation. ESPN’s Oct. 7 streaming announcement says all Disney+ subscribers in the United States can watch that traditional feed.
There are other alternatives, too. ESPN’s Oct. 11 lineup announcement places the version with former NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning on ESPN2, ESPN host Pat McAfee’s field-level presentation on ESPNU and the Next Gen Stats-focused broadcast on NFL Network.
The STAR WARS tie-in will begin before Super Bowl Sunday. ESPN says SC+, its daily sports show on Disney+, will introduce themed MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL highlights beginning Oct. 20, followed by animated Darth Vader interviews with participating NFL players beginning Oct. 26.
The timing also connects football’s biggest game with a franchise milestone. STAR WARS turns 50 in 2027, and ESPN’s announcement says a newly restored version of the original movie will return to theaters Feb. 19, just five days after the Super Bowl.
For parents planning a game-day gathering, the announcement offers a new viewing option, not a finished content guide. The date and channels are set; the specific world, voices in the booth and fuller character roster are still to come.
