Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Germie Bernard arrived to training camp wearing a “Just here to give God glory” sweatshirt, his Bible in hand.
“Like it says, you know, go to Him to get your daily bread. So, like every single day, I’m making sure that I’m open to my Word, that I’m praying, I’m giving Him the time because you know He has blessed me beyond measures, and you know, He gives me grace and mercies every single day to wake up,” Bernard said in an Instagram video with Prospect Media.
“And so I just know it’s a blessing to wake up, and I have to give Him my life,” the wide receiver continued. “Like He says, when Christ died, we died with Him. So we got a new life, and so that’s the way I try to live, and I just continue to try to bring the younger generation along with that. You know, I never try to be forceful with it, but I always just try to plant those seeds and let God do the rest and pray for people.”

When Bernard was originally signed to the Steelers in May, he wanted his fans to know one thing.
“I want people to know and understand that, you know, my identity is in Christ, and that’s something that I believe in the most and something that I want people to, you know, see within me and know,” Bernard declared in an interview with the Steelers. “I want to bring that to the community and have an impact in any way I can through that. And I know that this organization is going to get a selfless teammate, a guy that’s going to do everything he can to help the team have success and win.”
“I just wanted to find new ways to be able to glorify God, you know,” he added of being able to use football to share Christ. “What He has blessed me to do. And so, like, I know Ryan was wearing the eye strips, and I’m like, ‘Okay, well, this is another way that I can show people who Christ is and what Christ is doing within my life.’”
Whether through daily Scripture reading, his game-day attire or his own words, Bernard makes clear that his identity rests in Christ first — everything he does on the field is another opportunity to point people towards Him.
