Sir Michael Caine’s AI-cloned voice is narrating Homer’s THE ODYSSEY, with ElevenLabs releasing the 13-hour audiobook Tuesday for free on its ElevenReader platform.
“THE ODYSSEY is one of the greatest stories ever told,” Caine said of the project. “For nearly three millennia, its themes of perseverance, loyalty, temptation, and the enduring call of home have resonated across cultures and generations — and by bridging classical storytelling with digital innovation, this timeless epic is reimagined for modern audiences.”
The audiobook arrives a month before Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation — starring Matt Damon as Odysseus and Zendaya as Athena — opens in theaters July 17. Caine, a longtime Nolan collaborator whose work in THE DARK KNIGHT and THE PRESTIGE Movieguide® has covered, partnered with ElevenLabs last year to license his voice through the company’s Iconic Voice Marketplace. The platform allows approved creative teams to request use of his voice for audiobooks, articles, and other projects.
Jack McDermott, a growth leader at ElevenLabs, said the production carries on storytelling’s oldest tradition: “For centuries, stories like THE ODYSSEY have been passed from one generation to the next through written and spoken word. This production builds on that tradition, combining human creativity with the latest AI production capabilities to create an audiobook experience that feels truly immersive.”

The project leans heavily on AI throughout: four producers, six weeks of work, 20-plus AI-generated character voices, AI sound design and an original AI-composed score. ElevenLabs took a similar approach in 2025, when an AI replica of Judy Garland — produced with Garland’s daughter Liza Minnelli’s blessing — narrated L. Frank Baum’s THE WONDERFUL WIZARD OF OZ. What traditionally costs thousands of dollars in studio fees and weeks of scheduling collapses here into a fraction of both — and for books that would otherwise go unrecorded, that efficiency is genuinely valuable.
Voice actors, though, are watching the math with alarm. A 2024 survey by the Narrator’s Guild found that 68% of full-time narrators had discovered unauthorized AI replicas of their voices online, and 81% reported income erosion tied to AI editions cannibalizing their human-narrated work. The Caine deal is consensual and properly licensed, which matters — but it still opens a door that others in the industry are walking through without permission.
For Movieguide®’s audience, there’s something worth sitting with here. THE ODYSSEY is one of civilization’s oldest stories — perseverance, faithfulness, the ache of the long road home — and new formats can carry those ancient truths just fine. But what we lose when we strip the human voice from storytelling is a genuinely spiritual question: breath, particularity, and the weight of a real life behind the words don’t get cloned.
Caine seemed to anticipate the tension when he first signed with ElevenLabs. “It’s not about replacing voices; it’s about amplifying them — opening doors for new storytellers everywhere,” he said. If AI narration brings great literature to audiences who couldn’t otherwise access it, Christians who believe truth shows up in good stories should want that.
Still, a voice is a gift, and a gifted storyteller is not a file to be replicated. Nolan’s THE ODYSSEY opens July 17 — that one still has real people behind it.
