A real-life rescue dog is at the heart of Great American Family’s A CHRISTMAS RESCUE.

“Ten years ago, long before she knew the thrill of the spotlight, Niffy was a neglected, lonely dog found living by herself in an abandoned building in Saskatchewan,” PEOPLE reported, sharing that “her future changed forever when someone found her and chose to adopt her instead of ignoring her.”

Today, Niffy is starring as Shep in GAF’s A CHRISTMAS RESCUE alongside human co-stars Trevor Donovan and Stephanie Bennett. Bennett plays Emma, who is Shep’s owner and is working to make her town’s annual Christmas event a success.

Meanwhile, Donovan plays veterinarian Dr. Matthew McGuire, who is new to town and willing to lend a hand with the Christmas event, suggesting a pet adoption component. As he works with Emma (and Shep), the pair grow closer and sparks fly.

Pet adoption is something Donovan is especially passionate about, telling PEOPLE, “There are amazing animals sitting in shelters every day just waiting for their person to show up. Adoption gives them that chance. A home, some patience, and a lot of love can change their entire world — and usually they end up changing yours right back.”

“Pet adoption is about giving an animal a second chance at the life they deserve,” he continued. “There are so many incredible dogs and cats waiting in shelters for someone to see them, choose them, and give them a home. The amazing part is that the love always seems to come back tenfold.”

Earlier this year, he spoke to WECT News about an event he was hosting to support Paws Palace, a no-kill shelter in North Carolina.

“If a dog’s got to stay there without a forever home, that’s a great place to be,” Donovan said of the facility. “Just the way they treat their dogs and the way and how passionate they are about dog rescue.”

A CHRISTMAS RESCUE is part of Great American Family’s slate of Christmas movies premiering this year.

“Great American Media has become a gold standard destination for Christmas enthusiasts by creating one of the most beloved libraries of original holiday programming in all of television,” Bill Abbott, President and CEO of Great American Media, said in a statement. “The launch of our new 24/7 Great American Christmas channel on GFAM+ reflects the incredible passion viewers have for the uplifting holiday stories we create year-round.”

A CHRISTMAS RESCUE premieres Nov. 26 on Great American Pure Flix and will air on Great American Family and GFAM+ on Nov. 28.
