Patricia Heaton, star of EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND and THE MIDDLE, says a single humiliating night eight years ago — not a doctor’s warning or a rock-bottom crisis — is what finally got her to put down the wine glass for good.
The actress opened up about the moment in a recent interview, describing how her own son called her out in front of a room full of teenagers.
“That’s great, Mom. You can’t even speak,” Heaton’s youngest son told her, she recounted to Fox News, after she tried and failed three times to pronounce the word “tradition” during a family game night with her sons and their friends. Heaton, now 68, said the line landed like a gut punch, saying the moment “mortified” her.
Faith has never been incidental to how Heaton talks about her life, and this story is no exception. The night before the game-night incident, she says she prayed a specific, almost negotiating prayer, as she told Parade: “You know, God, I think I want to quit drinking…I will never be able to quit drinking. I love Maker’s Mark Old Fashions too much. But I think you want me to quit drinking, and I’d be willing to do it, but you have to make it happen, because I can’t.”
Less than 24 hours later, she couldn’t say “tradition” in front of her kids. Heaton took the timing as an answer, joking afterward, “Well, thanks for answering that prayer in record time, God. You know how to make it happen.”
By her own account, the drinking had crept up on her gradually rather than arriving as a dramatic collapse. A glass of wine while cooking dinner during the pandemic, with her sons grown and her acting work paused, turned into wine with dinner, wine while cleaning the kitchen, and wine through WHEEL OF FORTUNE and JEOPARDY! She recalled one night finishing nearly a full bottle without quite meaning to.
Heaton has been open about the process since, marking her progress publicly and eventually turning the experience into a business. Unable to find a non-alcoholic wine she actually liked, she launched Solubrae, a line that includes a white called Daylight and a rosé called Sundown. It is a small, practical footnote to a bigger story: a woman who asked God for help she couldn’t give herself, got an answer she didn’t enjoy hearing, and built something new out of it.
