A new SONIC series geared for preschool-aged children from Netflix and SEGA is coming soon.

The show will be “designed to give young audiences plenty of energy, humor and a little bit of attitude, while keeping Sonic and his friends at the center of the story,” TV Moments said on Instagram, noting that the new series is separate from Netflix’s three-season SONIC PRIME.

The series, currently being developed by Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, will target upper preschool viewers with a “high-voltage, comedic, yet emotionally grounded series built for kids who want to feel a little edge, a little attitude and a lot of ‘that’s my crew’ wish fulfillment,” Netflix described.

Nakahara, the Head Producer at SEGA, said fans can expect “something cute yet cool for SONIC…because we’ve got some amazing creative ideas lined up and we are just getting started. The whole team is absolutely thrilled!”

Netflix is adapting other SEGA games for the screen, including STRANGER THAN HEAVEN and CRAZY TAXI.

“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart and fandoms that show up,” Brandon Riegg, VP of  Nonfiction and Transmedia at Netflix, said in a press release. “With CRAZY TAXI, SONIC and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, we get to work across three completely different eras of SEGA’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences.”

The feature adaptation of CRAZY TAXI will be written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and Nakahara will produce.

Details for the STRANGER THAN HEAVEN live-action adaptation are still under wraps, Animation Magazine reported.

“We’ve watched Netflix take on stories across every kind of format and treat each one with real craft, and seeing that same dedication applied to SONIC, CRAZY TAXI and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is something we at SEGA are incredibly proud to be a part of,” Shuji Utsumi, President and COO of SEGA, said. “The fandoms of these games deserve storytelling that honors what makes each title special, and we know Netflix shares that commitment. This is just the start of what these titles can become.”

Sonic’s fandom is already thriving, thanks to games, movies and streaming, but a preschool series is certain to welcome in the franchise’s youngest fans. A release date for Netflix’s SONIC series has not been announced.
