This year, THE ROOKIE and live-action FIREFLY star Nathan Fillion promised he’d voice Captain Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds in an animated reboot. But the show faces a distribution setback.

Fillion and his FIREFLY co-star Alan Tudyck shared an update at MCM Comic-Con.

“So, you saw a video, not announcing a series, but announcing the development of the series. Boy, it takes a lot longer than one would hope. The development to get a show onto a television network or streaming platform. It’s not easy work, Alan, or else everyone would do it, right?” Fillion said.

Tudyk agreed, adding that the development isn’t all smooth sailing — but it never is.

“So, it’s in process much like developing photos when we were young. You go to a little box, guy who lives in a little house in a parking lot,” the actor explained. “That’s how they would do it in the states, the Kodak part, and you drop them off to some guy who was certainly stoned and you’d pick them up a little while later after he’s done rifling through all of your personal images. So, we’re in the rifling through the personal images part. We’re not ready to pick them up, but when we do, you will hear.”

Tudyk also hinted that they are waiting on 20th Television Animation, the rights holder for the franchise.

The original series synopsis reads: “In the far reaches of a war-torn galaxy, Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) leads a ragtag crew aboard the transport ship Serenity, dodging authority agents and outrunning danger at every turn. Joined by Zoe (Gina Torres), Wash (Alan Tudyk), and Kaylee (Jewel Staite), among others, this found family scrapes by on the fringes of civilization — until two mysterious fugitives change everything.”

The original show aired in 2002 for just one season. If the reboot kicks off, it will be set between events in the show and its 2005 movie continuation, SERENITY. Original actors Tudyk, Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite and Sean Maher will also all voice their characters in the series, Movie Web reported.

Writer-producer couple Marc Guggenheim and Tara Butters will write and serve as showrunners. Joss Whedon, who created the original series, will not have a role in the reboot, but gave his blessing. Oscar and Emmy-award-winning animation studio ShadowMachine has developed the concept art.

“The dedication of FIREFLY fans has kept this 25-year-old show relevant. Clearly, the return of FIREFLY is something the fans want. More importantly, it’s something they deserve,” Fillion told Deadline in March.
