HBO Max has greenlit the first authorized documentary about GILMORE GIRLS, the beloved mother-daughter dramedy that turned the fictional town of Stars Hollow into a second home for millions of viewers.
“Oh hey, hi… we’re making a documentary,” Lauren Graham announced on Instagram Aug. 5, confirming a project fans have wanted for years.
GILMORE GIRLS followed single mother Lorelai Gilmore, her bookish daughter Rory and their small-town Connecticut life for seven seasons on The WB and, later, The CW.
Graham, who brought Lorelai to life for all seven seasons, doesn’t say yes to just any GILMORE GIRLS project. At the 2025 Emmy Awards, she explained to Entertainment Tonight why she’d turned down a different, unauthorized documentary called DRINK COFFEE, TALK FAST, formerly titled SEARCHING FOR STARS HOLLOW.
“I don’t do anything the creator of my show isn’t a part of, so no,” Graham said at the time.

This time, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is in the room. Known for writing dialogue faster than most actors could memorize it, Sherman-Palladino and her husband and longtime writing partner, Daniel Palladino, will executive produce alongside Mark Blatty, Jane Cha Cutler, R.J. Cutler, Elise Pearlstein and Trevor Smith, according to The Wrap. Documentary filmmaker Bonni Cohen, known for ATHLETE A and THE WHITE HOUSE EFFECT, is directing.
Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and Cutler’s production banner, This Machine, part of Sony Pictures Television, are producing the project, with Melissa Robledo also on board. GOOD MORNING AMERICA reported the documentary will dig into “the unique alchemy of the creators, cast, crew and collaborators” to explain how GILMORE GIRLS “eclipsed expectations to become a cross-generational phenomenon.”
“A treasure trove of archival material, including never-before-seen outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage and original script pages,” is how HBO Max describes what’s coming, according to Variety. It’s the kind of footage devoted fans have spent two decades hoping somebody would finally unlock.
GILMORE GIRLS premiered on The WB Oct. 5, 2000, and ran seven seasons before Netflix revived it in 2016 with the limited series GILMORE GIRLS: A YEAR IN THE LIFE. The show marked its 25th anniversary in 2025, and reruns, streaming numbers and Stars Hollow-themed pop-up shops keep proving that Rory and Lorelai’s rapid-fire banter hasn’t lost its grip on audiences.
Movieguide® has tracked the GILMORE GIRLS documentary landscape closely, previously reporting on the unauthorized SEARCHING FOR STARS HOLLOW project, which logged more than 100 hours of footage and interviews with cast members like Kelly Bishop and Jared Padalecki but never landed Graham, Alexis Bledel or Melissa McCarthy. This new HBO Max documentary looks like the one longtime fans actually wanted: the version with the people who built Stars Hollow sitting in the room.
No premiere date has been announced yet for the untitled documentary.
