HGTV’s Jenny Marrs reflected on God’s faithfulness as she recalled the adoption process for daughter Sylvie.
“Yesterday, my phone reminded me of our time preparing to visit Sylvie in the Congo 13 years ago,” she wrote in an Instagram post. “Back then, we would FaceTime her as often as cell service allowed and each time was a miraculous gift. She’s alive! She’s looking healthy! We’re coming baby girl!”
Marrs continued, “It was an emotional, wonderful, sweet, unimaginably hard time. My heart lived on two continents and my prayers were desperate. The situation seemed impossible at times. Would she ever be allowed to come home? Would the government ever lift the ban keeping us apart?”

She then shared that today, as she was reading her Bible, she came across a note from that time in the margins of 2 Chronicles 14.
“It simply said ‘DGM’ and the date. (DGM is the Congolese government authority that was keeping our girl from coming home),” Marrs wrote. “We know the battle was bigger — it was spiritual — and the people at DGM were simply a part of a much larger story being written.”
The verse states, “O Lord, no one but you can help the powerless against the mighty! Help us, O Lord our God, for we trust in you alone.”
“I deeply believe in the importance of remembering God’s past faithfulness and, this morning, I’m reading these ancient words, this desperate prayer, with a perspective I didn’t have when I first underlined them,” Marrs wrote. “I trusted God then and I didn’t know the outcome. Now, I know. He would indeed fight on our behalf. He would indeed prevail against what seemed like a ‘vast horde.’ He would indeed help us.”
She added that she was sharing this story “as a reminder for whomever is in a situation this morning that feels hopeless. Even when we don’t know the outcome, we know the One who does. And, He is trustworthy.”
Earlier this year, Marrs celebrated Sylvie’s 14th birthday, writing on Instagram, “She is brave, strong-willed, fiercely independent, has a heart of compassion and a deep love for God. She met Jesus in a real way when she was waiting on us and we were waiting on her, and, even if her mind doesn’t remember, her soul does. She exudes his love and light and I continue to believe God has big plans in store for my girl.”
Marrs’ post is a reminder of God’s faithfulness, even in the darkest of times.
