THE ROOKIE has never needed a shared universe or a splashy crossover event to hold onto an audience — this summer’s Nielsen numbers prove the point all by themselves.
“According to Nielsen’s streaming data for January through June 2026, THE ROOKIE finished 12th overall, outperforming some of TV’s longest-running procedural franchises,” Collider reported. “While the show narrowly missed the Top 10, its performance is particularly impressive given its much smaller episode library compared to its competitors.”
The cop drama pulled in 12.817 billion minutes streamed on Hulu across its 144 episodes, edging out LAW & ORDER: SVU (11.952 billion minutes over 596 episodes), NCIS (11.870 billion minutes over 508 episodes) and the original LAW & ORDER (11.387 billion minutes). Those franchises have decades of back catalog working in their favor. THE ROOKIE beat them with a fraction of the material.
STRANGER THINGS still topped the overall chart with 23.261 billion minutes, and the kids’ show BLUEY wasn’t far behind at 22.809 billion. But for a network procedural competing against streaming giants built for bingeing, cracking the top dozen is its own kind of win.
The renewal that made all this possible wasn’t a sure thing. Star Eric Winter, who plays Officer Tim Bradford, has said the cast filmed an alternate version of the Season 8 finale that could have served as a series-ending farewell had ABC decided not to bring THE ROOKIE back for a ninth season.

ABC renewed the show in April anyway. THE ROOKIE’s season finale, “The Bandit,” aired in May and ended with Bradford proposing to Officer Lucy Chen, played by Melissa O’Neil, on the beach — right before criminals working for crime boss Heath Everett kidnapped the newly engaged couple.
Production on Season 9 got underway in late July, with new episodes expected to premiere sometime in 2027. The extended gap gives creator Alexi Hawley room to work out the future of his growing franchise, which now includes the spinoff THE ROOKIE: NORTH, premiering this month.
“There might be one in the works, for sure,” Hawley told Collider when asked about a crossover between the two shows. “There are some thoughts being put to who might go north or come south or both.”
Movieguide® has followed THE ROOKIE’s ratings climb for years, and the reasons behind its staying power haven’t changed much. A Movieguide® review of the show’s sixth-season premiere praised its “strong moral worldview,” noting the series treats law enforcement as an expression of just authority — a nod to Romans 13:4 and its description of government as “God’s servant for your good.” That same review flagged violence running hotter than its TV-14 rating suggests, including shootouts and bloody crime scenes, while noting the language stays clean.
Movieguide® also tracked the show’s earlier streaming surge, when a Netflix run pushed it into the Top 10 in more than 20 countries. The outlet later flagged budget concerns heading into Season 9, despite ABC ranking the Season 8 premiere among its top five all-time launches.
None of that guarantees Season 9 will be easy viewing for the whole family. THE ROOKIE has always asked audiences to sit with the cost of the job it celebrates, and parents screening it for teenagers should expect to weigh the violence before the romance. But a show built on honor, sacrifice and a genuinely respectful view of the people who protect their communities outdrawing NCIS is, at the very least, a good sign for what Christian families can still find on network television.
