Hannah Love Mooney wants parents to do more than pull children away from screens.

“So, we were like the remaining generation that still remembers having a childhood and being outside until the sun goes down,” she said in the Sept. 16 episode of “THE UPLOAD with Brooke Taylor.”

Mooney, who is married to Dan + Shay singer Shay Mooney, is a mother of four boys and the host of “Unexpected With Hannah Love” podcast. The official episode page describes the conversation as a discussion of motherhood, faith, spiritual warfare and raising children to know Jesus for themselves.

Her memory of outdoor childhood shapes the way she and Shay think about family life. Mooney said her generation experienced technology as it changed daily routines but did not grow up with tablets and constant digital entertainment as the default.

The point is not to pretend screens do not exist. It is to recognize what children can lose when digital life becomes the place where every quiet moment, inconvenience and unanswered question gets managed.

Mooney also drew a line between protection and overprotection. Discussing parenting educators David Thomas and Sissy Goff, she said some children are so shielded that “there’s no resilience in them. And that’s like one of their big things is building resilience, tolerance to things that are uncomfortable, right?”

For families, resilience does not mean ignoring danger or abandoning wise boundaries. It means allowing children to grow through age-appropriate challenges while giving them a trustworthy framework for decisions.

Mooney said that framework begins with the spiritual culture of the home. She described her role in direct terms: “I’m a gatekeeper for those that come and those that go,” a responsibility she connected to protecting the atmosphere and priorities of her family.

That language does not turn parents into controllers of every outcome. It describes stewardship — deciding what enters the home, what receives attention and which habits become normal before children are old enough to make all of those choices for themselves.

Mooney and the hosts also discussed prayer, Scripture and teaching children to recognize truth instead of merely trying to keep them away from every difficult idea. She said parents can equip children spiritually without assuming that shielding them from the world will prepare them to live wisely in it.

The phrase that ties her parenting philosophy together came near the end of the conversation. Mooney said, “like our ceiling is their floor. That’s where they start and we’re giving them a leg up,” describing the work parents do in marriage, healing and spiritual formation as a foundation their children can build on.

That foundation is not perfection. Mooney acknowledged that parents will still make mistakes, but she urged them to model faith in action by speaking truth, praying over their children and choosing obedience in ordinary decisions.

Mooney is also balancing homeschooling, family life and a transition connected to Shay’s touring schedule. Her larger point remains practical for any household: childhood needs room for play, limits, courage and the patient formation that happens long before a child faces a defining choice.

Parents cannot control every message their children will hear. They can make home a place where Scripture is practiced, questions are welcomed and children receive enough truth and resilience to walk into a noisy world without being owned by it.
