Country singer and AMERICAN IDOL Season 24 winner Hannah Harper is marking a year since her “String Cheese” audition by remembering the nerves, the family sacrifices and the prayers God answered along the way.
“Today, I’m looking back at a year full of answered prayers I didn’t even know to pray,” Harper reflected in an Instagram post on Oct. 29.
The anniversary marks the day she says she auditioned, not the day viewers first met her. Her performance reached television audiences on Feb. 2, 2026, according to Bluegrass Today.
In her new post, Harper recalled standing outside the Fisher Center at Belmont University, cold and nervous about facing the judges. She also remembered her then-1-year-old son having a meltdown moments before the audition, an upsetting start for a mom already facing something new.
“Up until that point, I’d only ever made music with my family, singing in churches,” she explained. Stepping into a solo competition meant letting people critique her performance in a way she had never experienced.
That family foundation goes back well before television. Harper’s official biography describes a childhood in Southeast Missouri surrounded by bluegrass gospel music and years traveling with her family band, experiences that helped develop her songwriting and passion for music ministry.

Still, she did not walk into the audition expecting a whole new career. Harper wrote that her plan was to sing her original song “String Cheese,” share her testimony and go home; instead, the judges gave her a golden ticket, and she began wondering how she could move forward with her babies and family.
“If this journey has taught me anything, it’s that every hardship can become a testimony,” she said. Harper wrote that she had feared misrepresentation but instead found an opportunity to share her faith, music and heart.
By May 11, she had become the season’s winner. ABC News reported that the mother of three thanked her husband during the finale for caring for their sons while she competed, a reminder that the victory involved more than the person holding the microphone.
Her husband, Devon Mendenhall, has joined her on the road as her tour manager. In an interview published in August by Fox News Digital, Harper said he had left law enforcement to help her pursue music.
“My entire family is on the road with me — both of my brothers, my parents, my kids,” she said.
She also acknowledged the practical challenge of working together: home and work no longer come with a clear dividing line. That earlier account gives some context to the gratitude in her anniversary post, where she thanked her husband, family, band and crew for their sacrifices.
Now, Harper is looking beyond the audition room again. Her Oct. 29 post teased a 2027 tour announcement without supplying dates, while celebrating the family and fans who have accompanied her through this first year.
“I can’t wait to see what God has in store!” she said.
The song that introduced her to a national audience grew out of motherhood, and her anniversary reflection keeps returning to the same people: her children, her husband and the family helping her carry this new chapter.
