Actor and “Wildmen” podcast co-host Dylan Sprouse spent much of his childhood clocking in on television sets, and he says those years still shape how he measures himself.

“It feels like my self-esteem for a long time was tied integrally to my ability to work and be on set,” the 34-year-old former Disney Channel star said during a Sept. 1 conversation with UGLY BETTY actor Mark Indelicato.

Sprouse and writer Brendan Columbus host “Wildmen,” where the pair often mix loose banter with candid conversations. Before Indelicato joined the episode, Sprouse praised his guest for building an adult career after starting young, then put a blunt name to their shared experience.

“We’re beating around the bush, but it’s child labor,” Sprouse said. He joked that children once worked in coal mines while he and other young entertainers sang and danced, but his punchline landed on a serious conclusion: it was still labor.

Later, Sprouse compared television production to a full office job, complete with a clock-in, clock-out rhythm and long, repeating hours. When a project ended, he said, the missing routine left a void.

Sprouse said growing up in that cycle fed a workaholic attitude. Indelicato agreed that the job had become part of who they were and described the anxiety of not working as jarring.

Sprouse began acting at eight months old alongside his twin brother, Cole Sprouse. He previously explained that identical babies appealed to productions because alternating the twins could effectively double the available working time.

The brothers eventually became Disney Channel fixtures on THE SUITE LIFE OF ZACK & CODY, which premiered in 2005 and followed 11-year-old twins living in Boston’s Tipton Hotel. They continued the story with THE SUITE LIFE ON DECK before stepping away from regular television work as teenagers.

Sprouse then studied video game design at New York University, a break he has said helped him learn about himself and build lasting friendships. The pause gave him something a full childhood schedule did not always leave room for: a life beyond the next call sheet.

The legal picture helps explain why his wording carries weight. The U.S. Department of Labor says federal child-labor rules do not apply to youth acting in movie, theater, radio or television productions, leaving significant responsibility to state laws and industry agreements.

California requires all minors working in entertainment to register for a work permit, and applicants ages 14 to 17 must complete sexual-harassment prevention training. SAG-AFTRA says its contracts offer safeguards, but it also reminds parents that they remain ultimately responsible for ensuring a young performer receives fair and respectful treatment.

That last point is bigger than paperwork. Parents can nurture a child’s talent without turning identity into a product, and a paycheck should never become the scorecard for a young person’s worth.

Parents of young performers need to protect schooling, rest, financial stewardship and the freedom to step away. Sprouse’s college years show what a healthy pause can offer: room to build a life larger than the next role.

Sprouse also credited Cole with giving him someone who understood the pressure from the inside.

“I was lucky enough to have an identical twin who experienced the same exact thing, right, at the same exact time,” he said. For families navigating opportunity and ambition, his story offers a grounded reminder: children need advocates who know that protecting the person matters more than preserving the career.
