New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye named Proverbs 16:9 as his favorite Bible verse during a Nov. 2 radio appearance, explaining why he trusts the Lord with his plans.

“And really, it’s the Lord doing the work and just trusting in Him and trusting in His plan,” Maye said on WEEI’s RICH AND KEN WITH TED JOHNSON after a listener asked him to name his favorite verse and explain his choice.

The verse reads, “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.”

Maye reflected on how easily people get caught up in planning the things they want to happen and spoke about praying for things and trying to see certain hopes become reality. He then pointed back to the Lord’s work rather than his own ability to arrange the outcome.

The exchange also gave one of the hosts something to take away from the interview. After saying he did not think he had heard the verse before, the host asked Maye for the reference again and said he would write it down.

The conversation came a day after New England’s comeback victory over the Miami Dolphins in rainy conditions. The Patriots’ own game report described an offense dealing with injuries and a team that had to recover from a difficult first half.

During the radio appearance, Maye discussed the importance of teammates sticking together and doing their jobs on the field.

Maye is in his third NFL season, according to his official Patriots player profile, after New England selected him in the first round of the 2024 draft out of North Carolina. The Bible question offered a different kind of introduction to the player fans usually hear discussing the next opponent.

Faith is never far from Maye’s conversations about his career.

“I think the biggest thing is using my platform to spread the Word and spread the Good News,” the New England Patriots quarterback told the media in August, according to Relevant Magazine.

“There’s purpose and there’s passion,” he added. “My passion is football, and my purpose is being a believer and strong in my faith.”

Maye led his team to the Super Bowl last year, and though the Patriots lost to the Seattle Seahawks, his purpose stayed the same.

“Being a follower of Jesus Christ is the biggest thing in my life,” he said ahead of the big game. Putting God first reminds him to “shine light on to others…leading them to a relationship” with Jesus by showing “how their life can change and what it can do for them.”

Praise God for athletes like Maye who use their platform for His glory.
