Actor Daniel Lissing has a playful answer for WHEN CALLS THE HEART fans who still miss Jack Thornton. What if the beloved Mountie survived?

“Well, let me just say, flashbacks or dream sequences…they never found the body,” the actor teased during a Hallmark Christmas Cruise panel moderated by Just Jared.

Lissing was answering a question about whether he would consider returning in a flashback or dream sequence. Instead, he started imagining Jack somewhere with amnesia, working as a carpenter and hobbling around with a sore knee, unable to recognize the people who knew him.

It was a playful bit of storytelling, not a casting announcement or a change to Jack’s fate on the series. But Lissing also left room for another opportunity to work with the network that introduced him to so many viewers.

“So, you never know,” Lissing answered after describing his long relationship with Hallmark and the pleasure of working together.

His next observation — that viewers had moved on from Jack — did not go over quite as well. The audience shouted its disagreement, and actress Heather Hemmens, seated beside him, pointed out that the crowd had made its position clear.

For anyone who remembers Jack and Elizabeth’s romance, the reaction is easy to understand. Their wedding was a major milestone for the drama, and his death in the Season 5 finale in 2018 left Elizabeth a widow shortly before she learned she was pregnant.

Entertainment Tonight explained at the time that Lissing chose to leave for personal reasons and said Hallmark and his co-stars supported him. The creative team then faced a difficult question: How could Elizabeth’s story continue without him?

Actress Lori Loughlin explained during that discussion that recasting Jack did not feel right to the team. Sending him away would leave Elizabeth waiting, while having him break up with her would clash with the character they had established.

Lissing has already revisited Jack outside the original series. He made a single-scene cameo in WHEN HOPE CALLS in 2021.

That smaller return offers a useful reminder of why the panel question mentioned those storytelling possibilities. Revisiting a familiar character does not always require undoing the story that came before.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth’s life in Hope Valley has kept moving. Season 14 will arrive in January 2027, with Elizabeth and Nathan preparing for their wedding after their engagement in the Season 13 finale.

The network also announced actress Marilu Henner as Nathan’s mother, Bernice Grant, and Loughlin’s return as Abigail Stanton. Whether or not Jack makes some kind of return, it’s clear that there is plenty happening in Hope Valley.
