Candace Cameron Bure almost gave up while competing on Fox’s reality series SPECIAL FORCES: WORLD’S TOUGHEST TEST.
“I was ready to quit the show. Like, I was ready to quit. I was like, ‘I don’t know if I want to keep going,’” Bure told US Weekly. “It was physically the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life — and yet it was exciting, but brutal.”
Set in the Malaysian jungle, the show sees cultural figures “endure some of the harshest, most grueling challenges from the playbook of the actual Special Forces selection process. There are no votes, and no eliminations — just survival.”
A lot of prayer and consideration went into Bure’s decision to participate. She originally passed when the network reached out to her a few years ago, but when they asked again, the actress reached out to Olympian Shawn Johnson East, who previously competed on SPECIAL FORCES.
Bure also got the support from her husband, Val Bure.

“So they all prayed for me a lot. I know they were praying every day that I was gone, and that meant so much to me,” Bure told TV Insider.
Now that she’s back, Bure is “so glad I participated, said yes and showed up. I’m really proud of myself for that.”
“But it was really hard — physically and mentally,” she admitted, “and you learn a whole lot about yourself, particularly your weaknesses.”
She just turned 50 earlier this year, which added its own set of challenges.
“I don’t know if there’s any preparation. I’ll just tell you, I’m a big crybaby. Also being in perimenopause, your hormones are all over the place. I think that it truly was another reason why I wanted to do it because I was going in hoping I would inspire other women my age going through that,” she explained.
“Because sometimes you just don’t even feel like yourself. You don’t feel like you’re in your right mind and it’s just a matter of hormone balance,” Bure continued. “Especially in public, on television. I don’t even know what we’re gonna watch back. I might be cowering and so embarrassed to see what’s gonna happen. I don’t really know.
Ultimately, she leaned on her faith, recently posting a video of her thoughts while she trained for filming.
“I’m excited about what I’m going to learn…but I really want to hear what God has to say to me and how He’s going to speak to me through this adventure…and how He will sustain me while I push my limits, mentally, physically and through fear,” Bure said.
SPECIAL FORCES: WORLD’S TOUGHEST TEST premiered Sept. 24 at 9 p.m. ET on FOX. New episodes drop weekly, streaming on Hulu the following day.
