Anne Hathaway pushed “really hard” to get Julie Andrews in PRINCESS DIARIES 3, but the SOUND OF MUSIC star says she doesn’t think she should “be a part of” it.
“First of all, I just want to say if she has a change of heart, we’re down,” Hathaway recently told Entertainment Tonight. “Just anything, really. But we also want to be respectful. Like, for goodness’ sakes, if anybody has contributed to the world of entertainment and to our collective joy, it’s her. Whatever she wants, we completely understand.”
This month, Andrews, 90, told The Hollywood Reporter she thinks her acting days are behind her.
“I’m not completely retired, but it’s a different kind of work that I do these days — [writing] books, and I do a lot of recording of podcasts and voiceovers. But truly, I don’t think I should be a part of it,” she said.
The third movie will be a continuation of Princess Mia Thermopolis Renaldi’s story from THE PRINCESS DIARIES 1 and 2.
“I want the women who were 6 when the first one came out — a lot of whom are now mothers themselves, maybe even with 6-year-olds — I want them to feel like they’re bringing their children to something that mattered to them, a core memory for them, something that was a part of their heart and their lives,” Hathaway said.

Hathaway has talked about reviving the franchise for a few years now. She wants the movie to be just right and doesn’t want to rush anything. Adele Lim will direct the movie, and Flora Greeson will write the script, The Hollywood Reporter said.
“That’s a lot of pressure, but I feel like this is a great team,” Hathaway said.
So far, Hathaway is the only original cast member confirmed to return, PEOPLE reported. Mandy Moore, Chris Pine and Sandra Oh have all expressed interest in returning.
It has been nearly two years since the project began development. The original script was scrapped, and a new writer was hired, which delayed the process.
“Miracles happen ✨👑 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues ❤️🔥,” Hathaway first announced back on Oct. 5, 2024.
Lim said of the project, “As a die-hard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core [tenets] of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
Hopefully, the project will still be a success without the former queen of Genovia in it.
