An upcoming role as a pastor in BAD COUNSELORS came at the perfect time for Chris Klein.
“Every once in a while, a character in a story comes around, and where you are as an artist, and where you are in your life, they just line up,” he told CBN News. “And I really found that with Pastor Tom.”
Klein continued, “I’m a father. I’ve come of age. I am now a mentor to young people. I have two children of my own. You know, my volunteer service these days is spent coaching and supporting my children’s goals and ambitions and inspirations and their friends.”
Klein plays Pastor Tom in BAD COUNSELORS, an comedy from director and screenwriter Chris Dowling, where “Two frat bros must become church bros, fast,” per a synopsis of the movie.
“After one wild night ends in handcuffs and a campus police escort, two best friends are slapped with 120 hours of community service due in two weeks, or they’re expelled. Their genius plan? Pose as counselors at a local Christian youth camp, where every sing along, campfire devotional and trust fall counts toward the clock,” the synopsis continues. “Just one problem (okay, three): they don’t like kids, they hate camping and they have barely set foot in a church. Now they’ll have to learn the lingo, fake the faith and hide the flask all while dodging suspicious pastors, prankster campers and the cutest co-ed counselors they’ve ever seen. Can two party boys lie their way to redemption? Or will their house of half-truths come crashing down before the closing bonfire? Either way, they’d better start praying for a hedge of protection.”
Klein shared, “At its heart, it’s a story about finding grace in yourself and becoming a better person than you were. And that’s a story that resonates for all of us.”
In an interview with Heartlander News, Dowling spoke about toeing the line between faith and comedy.
“Life is full of rough edges, and that’s where I think the comedy is,” he explained, adding that his goal is “to find the edge — but you can’t go over the edge.”
Dowling said that in BAD COUNSELORS, “We got to play on some of the edges of that with this one, which is why I think it has a broad appeal.”
“We made a film that reaches beyond the church crowd,” he added, “and it’s tough to do.”
BAD COUNSELORS is now playing in theaters.
