Hope Valley has plenty of stories to tell, but some of the best ones happen before the cameras roll.
“I believe it’s the rare combination of family, faith, hope and love, mixed in with a bit of humor,” series co-creator Michael Landon Jr. told From the Desk about WHEN CALLS THE HEART’s appeal.
From a different Mountie in the original novel to a wedding dress with a modern beginning, here are 15 details worth knowing.
1. The original book’s Mountie isn’t Jack. Author Janette Oke’s WHEN CALLS THE HEART introduces Elizabeth Thatcher to Wynn Delaney, a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Readers meet a different romantic hero from the Jack Thornton familiar to longtime television viewers.
2. Erin Krakow wasn’t the movie’s Elizabeth. Actress Poppy Drayton played Elizabeth Thatcher in the original WHEN CALLS THE HEART movie. Her agency’s official credits list the role and director Michael Landon Jr.; actress Erin Krakow later made Elizabeth her own in the series.
3. The LITTLE HOUSE connection runs deeper than a surname. Landon is the son of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE star Michael Landon. In his original interview with From the Desk, he called that series his favorite of his father’s work and credited it with shaping his storytelling.
4. A financial setback helped reshape the movie. After the planned WHEN CALLS THE HEART movie lost funding during the 2008 recession, Landon couldn’t bring actors Stephen Amell and Maggie Grace back. He created a new story that incorporated their existing footage as flashbacks.

5. Oke came out of retirement for more Canadian West stories. In 2014, she teamed up with her daughter, author Laurel Oke Logan, to write Return to the Canadian West. Their publisher described the mother-daughter collaboration in a behind-the-scenes look at co-writing.
6. The companion novels don’t just retell the episodes. WHERE COURAGE CALLS offers another way into this world. Bethany House explains that Return to the Canadian West follows the television characters, but not the episode plots—so watching the show doesn’t give readers every answer.
7. The companion story steps into the Roaring Twenties. Oke specifically placed WHERE COURAGE CALLS in 1920s Canada. She described Beth Thatcher’s journey against a changing, post-World War I world, as more young women pursued education, careers and greater independence.
8. Hope Valley stands on a real family farm. The sets sit at MacInnes Farms in Langley, British Columbia. The property’s owners describe their 100-acre location as both a working agricultural property and a home for screen productions.
9. Three houses once did the work of an entire neighborhood. During a 2014 set visit, production designer Brentan Harron explained that the crew had three physical row houses. Visual effects multiplied them into the long rows of miners’ homes viewers saw onscreen.
10. That coal mine had some surprisingly soft ingredients. The same first-season set visit revealed that finely ground rubber stood in for coal dust. Cleverly disguised foam blocks created the mine’s rock face, and even its large supporting timbers were faux.
11. Rosemary’s wedding dress started out strapless. Costume designer Barbara Gregusova revealed in a 2020 interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet that the wardrobe team added sleeves to the gown. That alteration helped bring a more modern dress closer to the story’s period.
12. The wardrobe has its own color language. In that costume-design interview, Gregusova described distinct palettes for the characters. Actress Pascale Hutton’s Rosemary often wore vivid blue and red, while Elizabeth leaned toward lighter shades, including pink and yellow.
13. The Canfields really are a family—partly. Actor Viv Leacock plays Joseph Canfield alongside his real-life daughter, Vienna, and son, Elias. The young actors play Angela and Cooper, making those father-and-children scenes a genuine family collaboration.
14. Vienna’s preparation went beyond learning lines. To portray Angela, who is blind, Vienna learned to read Braille. In the family’s 2021 Entertainment Tonight interview, she explained how seriously she took understanding the details of her character’s experience.
15. The Hearties have a reunion of their own. The tenth Hearties Family Reunion took place Oct. 1–4, 2026, in British Columbia. Its schedule included cast sessions and Hope Valley set visits — an opportunity for viewers to step into the community they usually visit through a screen.
