TRACKER Premiere Leaves Colter With a Notebook Mystery—and No Clear Answers

Colter Shaw starts TRACKER’s fourth season with a notebook full of finished jobs—and one case that, according to TVLine, still has no answer.

“Could there be a much longer, season-long bad guy or ghost that he’s chasing?” TRACKER executive producer and showrunner Elwood Reid told TVLine before the premiere. He described a possibility the writers were considering, not a confirmed explanation of that notebook entry.

That distinction matters for viewers trying to piece together the new clue: there is something unresolved on the page, but no identified culprit or confirmed season-long connection. TVLine’s Oct. 4 report raises the possibility that the moment plants another extended mystery; Reid’s comments do not settle it.

The episode opens with Colter in his Airstream, where he gets out of bed, makes breakfast and pauses before opening a small brown book, TVLine recapped. Other visible entries carry completion marks, but one dog-eared page does not. Its notes describe a case that remains ongoing.

Those notes mention two unsuccessful attempts to speak with a couple, then a follow-up call three days later with someone identified only as M. The entry also mentions a woman leaving and someone seen in a car, leaving the vehicle’s ownership as an unanswered question. TVLine cautions that the identities — including whether M means an initial or simply male — remain unknown.

The premiere does not return to the notebook thread, according to the recap. Instead, Colter searches for a teenage boy’s missing father, with the rescue taking place at the Port of Los Angeles. Solving that week’s assignment does not supply an answer to the separate entry viewers saw earlier.

Reid’s broader comments suggest the writers want to test more than Colter’s ability to find someone. In the interview quoted by TVLine, he discussed allowing cases to leave emotional scars and asked what happens when Colter fails or makes a costly mistake. That creative direction is clearer than any connection to this particular page.

“It’s not always going to be a happy ending.” Reid said that before Season 4 while discussing the consequences of Colter’s work. It is a warning about the direction of the stories, not a revelation about whose names belong in the notebook.

There is another unresolved story to keep separate from this clue. In a Sept. 30 interview report, TVLine asked Reid about the unsolved killing of the mother of Reenie’s assistant, Melanie Day. That report describes a storyline the showrunner intends to pursue, without identifying it as the notebook case.

“We’re going to go there,” Reid told TVLine about Mel’s mother. He said the team was building that story, which gives viewers a firmer statement of intent than the possible larger mystery.

The setting has changed, too: Movieguide® reported in May that production would move from Vancouver to Los Angeles. The premiere’s port rescue puts that new location to work.

CBS confirms that actor Justin Hartley plays Colter and that Season 4 premiered Oct. 4 on CBS, with Paramount+ availability varying by subscription plan. The network’s episode listing places the second episode, “Switchback,” on Oct. 11. Whether it revisits that unfinished page remains an open question.
