Should You Watch It?

Yes. THE BISHOP’S WIFE is a charming Christmas fantasy with a strong Christian and moral center. Cary Grant’s enchanting performance, Loretta Young’s warmth, and David Niven’s increasingly exasperated bishop give the story both humor and heart.

The film asks what happens when a bishop becomes more focused on material plans than spiritual priorities. It also honors family life, kindness, prayer, Scripture, and the meaning of Christmas. The content concerns are mild: comic mishaps, jealousy, gossip, and an angel expressing an impossible longing for a family with the bishop’s wife.

The music, cinematography, special effects, and concluding sermon add to the film’s enduring beauty. For a thoughtful, uplifting family classic, this is WORTH THE TRIP.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

During Christmas, an angel named Dudley comes to earth to help a bishop re-prioritize his life. The bishop is consumed with plans for a new cathedral, while his wife, Julia, and daughter, Debby, need his attention.

Dudley begins helping the family in unexpected ways. He tells Debby stories of David and takes Julia on walks the bishop has neglected. As Julia and Debby grow fond of Dudley, the bishop becomes jealous of the attention his unexpected visitor receives.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means this is an especially delightful and accomplished classic. Cary Grant gives an enchanting performance whose natural charm moves the story forward. Loretta Young is beautiful as Julia, and David Niven is excellent as the increasingly exasperated bishop.

The movie centers its story around Scripture without becoming cheesy or poorly written. Its music, cinematography, and cute special effects greatly enhance the fantasy. A passionate sermon about the meaning of Christmas provides a memorable conclusion.

The Worldview

THE BISHOP’S WIFE presents a very strong Christian and moral worldview. The story includes prayer, a church, a boy’s choir rehearsal, several scriptural references, and a bishop responsible for building a new cathedral. Its central correction is spiritual: the bishop must learn that material plans cannot replace the people and priorities he has neglected.

The film exalts kindness, family, prayer, Scripture, and the meaning of Christmas. Its angelic fantasy premise is imaginative rather than a biblical account, and Dudley’s longing to have a family with the bishop’s wife creates a romantic complication the story treats as impossible. Still, the movie ultimately points away from jealousy and materialism toward spiritual priorities and an inspiring Christian message.

The film’s central longing is for a life ordered around what matters most. Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
