In Hallmark’s TOAST TO ITALY, Jenny hunts for a special bottle of wine that plays a part in all of her family member’s weddings. When an attempt to buy a bottle fails, Jenny teams up with journalist Arrigo, who also seeks a bottle. As the pair continues their search, sparks fly, leading to an unexpected romance.
Jenny’s family traditionally toasts every marriage with a special bottle of wine. The wine is rumored to bless the marriage; a wedding without the special wine is cursed to end in divorce. However, when Jenny and her sister realize they lack a bottle for their little sister’s upcoming wedding, Jenny heads to Italy to track the wine down.
At a wine auction, Jenny clashes with Arrigo, a British journalist who wants the wine for a story. As the pair bicker, an outbid by someone else prompts them to concoct a new plan to obtain the wine. This adventure takes Jenny and Arrigo through the Italian countryside as they follow leads.
While Arrigo plans to scoop a bottle out from under Jenny, he wonders if his story holds value as they grow closer. Meanwhile, Jenny wrestles with her feelings for Arrigo, knowing their relationship carries an expiration date upon her return to America.
When Jenny accidentally translates an Italian conversation Arrigo has with his editor, misunderstandings arise, leaving both confused about their feelings. Can the couple set aside their differences, find a bottle of the special wine, return it to America in time for Jenny’s sister’s wedding, and navigate their relationship?
TOAST TO ITALY showcases an interesting plot line, yet the story drags on with minimal action. The main characters repeat steps continuously, traveling to new places, discovering who might possess the wine, and attempting to find it, which proves somewhat dull to watch. Little drama exists between the main couple, rendering their storyline less engaging.
TOAST TO ITALY contains a mixed worldview, including moral elements like family and the power of love, Christian elements such as a character lighting a candle for a late family member in a church and mentions of “blessings,” and Pagan elements with multiple mentions of a curse and a scene where two characters “break” the curse.
