TESTAMENT: Episode 1.1

This is a rare thing: a faithful, well-made retelling of the Book of Acts that doesn't feel like a Sunday-school filmstrip. Angel Studios reimagines the early church's persecution inside a modern, dystopian United Kingdom, and the premiere episode uses that unusual setting to make an old story feel urgent again.

The Christian content here isn't a subplot — it's the whole point, and it's handled with real skill. The Apostles preach openly, baptize new believers, and stand firm against a government that fears them. The cost of discipleship is shown honestly: a curfew broken, a shove to the ground, an arrest on false charges. None of it is graphic, and there's no profanity at all.

The rough edges are craft issues, not moral ones — some stiff supporting performances and choppy editing keep this just short of four stars. For families with older children ready to talk about persecution and faith, this is well worth your time.

In an alternate, modern United Kingdom still ruled by the Roman Empire, the Apostles are winning converts by the hundreds with the message that Jesus is King. British teenager Stephen encounters the Holy Spirit firsthand and, against his mother's warnings, joins their mission. Meanwhile, an ambitious Roman lieutenant and his superiors grow nervous about the movement's spread — and start planning to shut it down.

Three stars here means genuinely good television with a couple of clear weak spots. The direction, lighting, and grounded camerawork are strong, and the show makes real locations in the UK feel lived-in and oppressive — the "grimy," Hunger Games-inspired aesthetic works.

Where it stumbles: the principal actors, especially Stephen and the Apostles, carry real conviction, but supporting performances feel stiff and underrehearsed, giving some scenes a low-budget, community-theater feel next to more polished ones. The editing doesn't help — cuts between scenes sometimes feel forced, and sequences that need room to breathe get cut short. It's an episode with real vision that hasn't fully solved its execution problems yet.

Testament exalts exactly what the Book of Acts exalts: the Gospel preached boldly, baptism as public commitment, and deep, costly friendship formed around following Jesus. Stephen's arc — helping a disabled homeless man, defying his mother's authority to serve Christ, absorbing a miracle he can't explain — mirrors the pattern of the earliest disciples: ordinary people transformed by encountering the risen Christ and the price they pay for it.

The dystopian Roman setting sharpens rather than dilutes the biblical worldview. By making the persecution modern and visceral — curfews, riot batons, false heresy charges — the show makes the early church's courage feel less like ancient history and more like a live question: would you keep meeting, keep preaching, keep baptizing, if it cost you your safety?

The story's ache is the ache of every believer under pressure — to stay faithful when the world in power calls your faith a crime. Scripture answers that ache directly: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven" (Matthew 5:10).

Testament takes the Book of Acts and makes it feel dangerous again — a church of ordinary people preaching, baptizing, and building real friendship under a government that wants them silenced. It stumbles on some wooden supporting performances and choppy editing, but the conviction at its center is real. Worth watching — for families with older children.
