Should You Watch It?

BOLT is the kind of animated adventure that gives your family plenty to enjoy. Its jeopardy, danger, comedy, characters, and affection between Bolt and Penny work together beautifully. The animation is captivating, the characters are endearing, and the movie is good, wholesome fun from beginning to end.

The film also offers clear moral values: doing the right thing, being heroic, loving others, staying loyal, and sacrificing for others. Its few concerns are mild by comparison, though some action violence may frighten younger viewers, and there is one light reference to dogs sniffing each other.

If you want an entertaining family movie with a heartwarming center, BOLT is worth seeing.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Bolt is a canine actor on a television superhero show who believes he has real super powers. After filming goes awry, he is accidentally shipped in a box to New York City.

Separated from Penny, Bolt finds Mittens, a sarcastic cat, and forces her to help him get home. A wacky hamster named Rhino soon joins them as they face real-world dangers on their journey back to Hollywood.

Is It Any Good?

Four stars means BOLT delivers excellent entertainment from beginning to end. The animation is captivating, the characters are endearing, and the movie combines jeopardy, danger, comedy, character, and love seamlessly.

The film is also described as the first movie to totally integrate the talents of Disney and Pixar, with the Pixar touch clearly apparent. BOLT is lovable, adorable, heroic, and fun—a terrific movie that stands among the best movies of the year.

The Worldview

BOLT presents a very strong moral worldview with redemptive qualities. It exalts doing the right thing, being heroic, loving others, remaining loyal, and sacrificing for others. Bolt’s devotion to Penny gives the story its emotional center, while the journey places friendship and courage alongside its comedy and adventure.

The film’s moral vision aligns with biblical values in its emphasis on loyalty, love, courage, and self-sacrifice. It presents these virtues through an animated adventure rather than a specifically Christian story, but its central lessons are wholesome and positive.

The film’s longing for loyalty and love points toward the biblical call to put others before ourselves: “Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4).
