Paramount-Warner Bros. Gets New Name: Skydance

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery’s planned combined company has a name — Skydance — and Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison said the new corporate identity will leave the two familiar studio brands in the spotlight.

“By combining them, we aren’t rewriting history — we’re equipping these iconic studios with a more powerful engine,” Ellison wrote in his Oct. 2 announcement, describing his ambitions for bringing the companies together.

The name is shorter than the list of businesses it would sit above. But Ellison’s explanation makes a distinction worth keeping straight: Skydance would identify the parent company, rather than replace Paramount and Warner Bros. as the names audiences recognize on their movies.

In the written announcement published by Variety, Ellison said the studios have their own identities and legacies, and he did not want a new corporate name to overshadow either one. He described the choice as a way to give the combined business its own identity while keeping its established brands prominent.

The name Skydance comes from Ellison’s original production company, Skydance Media, Variety reported. The announcement would extend that familiar name to a much larger collection of movie, television and streaming businesses.

The precise corporate name would be Skydance Corporation. In its Oct. 2 report to the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it intends to change its name from Paramount Skydance Corporation, with the change expected to take effect Oct. 6.

The stock-market identity would change, too. That same report says the company intends to replace its Class B stock ticker, PSKY, with SKYD as it transfers the listing from Nasdaq to the New York Stock Exchange. It expects the new listing to begin at or around the market opening Oct. 6.

The companies’ Sept. 30 joint statement set Oct. 6 as the anticipated closing date for the merger, subject to customary closing conditions.

The proposed umbrella would cover far more than the two movie studios. Paramount’s announced post-acquisition portfolio includes CBS, CNN, HBO, HBO Max, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Discovery, HGTV and Food Network, among other businesses. Keeping those brands visible is part of Ellison’s stated approach, not a promise that every business will operate exactly as it does today.

“Together we’ll build one integrated company that is creator-first, tech-forward and built to scale globally,” Ellison said in Paramount’s Sept. 30 leadership announcement, before revealing the new name.

That earlier statement said Ellison would remain chairman and CEO of the combined company, concentrating on long-term strategy, creative direction and technology. It named Mattel Chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz as the combined company’s co-CEO effective at closing, with responsibility for day-to-day management and integration.

For viewers, the clearest takeaway is the difference between the corporate umbrella and the names beneath it. Skydance is the announced identity for the combined business; Paramount and Warner Bros. would remain distinct studio brands.
