AMERICAN IDOL judge Luke Bryan is getting ready to release a new track, “Praying By The Rules,” which puts his faith on display.
In a 30-second clip of the song, Bryan sings, “For my dear Savior, to help an ol’ boy out // Without a Bible in his hand, showing up just as I am // Hat’s on, head ain’t bowed // Ain’t got no Southern Baptist pew, and I’m as dusty as these boots // I hope it’s cool, that I ain’t praying by the rules.”
He said the song isn’t “about being perfect; it’s about showing up as you are.” It releases on Sept. 18 as part of his new album Signs.
“Praying By The Rules” is a special one. We all got on our own relationship with the Lord. It ain’t about being perfect, it’s about showing up as you are.https://t.co/PMKAPHDNTR pic.twitter.com/GXH36fEELO

He can’t wait for fans to hear the whole album.
“It is always a great day when I get the chance to release new music,” Bryan said, according to uDiscover Music. “I’ve been working on this album for the past year, and I just love how it turned out. I was able to co-write a few, then turn to the writers in Nashville to round them out. I feel like my fans have always let me record songs that make you feel good, so I went into this album wanting everyone to just have fun.”
Even though he wanted to keep Signs fun and light, faith remained at the center of the project.
“It’s been really in my head about being solid in your faith for many, many years. I think your small-town values and small-town work ethic and what you learned in the church and your family and your neighbors carries me through life the rest of my life,” Bryan said on AMERICAN IDOL’s second-annual “Songs of Faith” episode, where he sang “Jesus is Love.”
Bryan also sang his song “Jesus ‘Bout My Kids” on AMERICAN IDOL’s Easter Sunday episode.
“Faith & fatherhood from @lukebryan,” AMERICAN IDOL shared on social media. “Powerful message in #JesusBoutMyKids!”
“This song is totally real to our family environment, and I’m sure a lot of other people out there,” the country star told Taste of Country.
“This is a song that I could go to any church of this world of ours, any Christian church, and sing this song, and it can be interpreted very Christian-like. I think it’s a beautifully written song that every parent can really relate to…Especially raising your kids in a Christian household, which is what my wife and I strive to do,” he added.
Bryan isn’t ashamed of his faith in God, and fans can’t wait to hear “Praying By The Rules” when it drops on Sept. 18.
