Should You Watch It?

Yes, but know what you're getting into. This charming romcom delivers an interesting plotline and realistic obstacles for the two romantic leads. The characters all feel authentic, and the lead actors have excellent chemistry. It’s a lighthearted, heartfelt movie that spotlights hard work and friendship as much as romantic love.

However, the movie includes excessive foul language, including 11 “f” words, many references to sexual activity, and one sex scene that includes some nudity. There are also some references to homosexuality, some light alcohol use, and some strong immoral behavior that, while rebuked, might upset some viewers.

This clever romcom hits all the genre’s high points while still delivering a fresh story, strong chemistry, and a thoughtful look at the value of hard work, friendship, and love. The romance gets the formula right, but viewers may want to think twice before pressing play.

The Story

NO SPOILERS — WE KEEP THE SURPRISES

Determined to push her two friends, who are totally in love, together, PhD student Olive Smith comes up with a fake boyfriend. The problem? Now she must find a real guy to convince her friends of the relationship. Enter Dr. Adam Carlsen, a professor known for being grouchy and work-obsessed. To Olive’s surprise, Adam agrees. He needs to convince a colleague he has ties that will keep him on campus. The pair starts fake-dating. However, as their relationship deepens, will those fake feelings turn into something real?

Is It Any Good?

This movie earns its four stars with a clever script that checks all the beloved romcom boxes, from dating shenanigans and awkwardly hilarious moments to dramatic declarations of love, while adding enough fresh twists to keep the story lively.

The academic setting also gives the movie an extra spark, and it’s refreshing to see Olive’s academic goals and friendships receive just as much attention as her potential romance.

Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman share great chemistry, and their slow shift from reluctant acquaintances to something more makes their romance a delight to watch. Relatable characters, witty dialogue, and a fresh take on familiar romcom territory make this a charming choice for genre fans. However, handle with care: this formula contains adult ingredients.

The Worldview

Overall, the movie carries a moral worldview. Its characters work hard to reach their goals, build strong friendships, and encourage one another. In the end, they stand up to a man who abuses his power. The story also follows a young researcher who wants to find a cure for the cancer that killed her mother.

However, the movie also contains objectionable content. Foul language runs throughout, and the story makes many references to sexual activity. It includes a homosexual character, a discussion of demisexuality, and a sex scene with some nudity between two unmarried characters. The movie treats this premarital sex as part of a happy romance, which undercuts its otherwise moral outlook.

One immoral character tells a woman he will only let her work in his lab if she has sex with him. Other characters strongly rebuke his behavior and eventually confront him. This one nails the chemistry, but its foul language and casual sex contaminate the experiment.

The Content Guide

The specifics — spoilers included by nature — so you can judge for your own family.

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements

A moral worldview, promoting strong friendships and hard work, as well as rebuking a character’s immoral behavior. The characters want the best for each other, supporting and encouraging each other in their pursuits;

Foul Language

38 obscenities including 11 “f” words, 17 “s” words, two “b” words, three “a” words, tw “h” words, and three “d*ck”s, and 12 "OMG" profanities;

Violence

No violence;

Sex

One premarital sex scene between the lead couple, as well as a homosexual character (only discussed, no same-sex couples are shown) and a discussion of demisexuality (when a person only feels sexual attraction after a strong emotional bond has formed). There are also many verbal references to a couple sleeping together, but since they are fake-dating, these references aren’t true;

Nudity

One scene of naturalistic upper male nudity when a character plays a game outside, one scene that includes male and female nudity; nothing is shown on the female character, but we see the man’s upper body and bottom;

Alcohol Use

Four scenes include social drinking at parties/a bar, but no one drinks to excess;

Smoking and/or Drug Use and Abuse

In one scene, several characters are said to be “high,” but no one is shown doing drugs; and,

Miscellaneous Immorality

 Very strong immoral behavior from a character who tells another he will only approve her grant and let her use his lab if she sleeps with him. He then threatens her and says he will steal her research and ruin her reputation if she tries to report his behavior to anyone.

Talk About It

Questions for the drive home, the dinner table, or the youth group.

01

Olive’s hard work is driven by her desire to find a cure for the cancer that killed her mother. What does scripture say about doing good work and sharing it with others. How can you view your work as a way for you to help your community? Hebrews 13:16

02

Olive has strong friendships with Anh and Malcolm, and they all challenge and encourage one another. Do you have friends who do the same for you? How do they challenge you to grow spiritually? Proverbs 27:17

03

The movie presents premarital sex as part of a happy romance. What does Scripture say about God's design for sex and marriage, and how would you explain it to your children? Hebrews 13:4

The Final Word

THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS mixes a clever premise with familiar romance tropes and delivers a fresh, funny romcom. The movie champions friendship and hard work, but foul language, sexual content, and immoral behavior crowd the screen. Discerning romcom fans will find plenty to love, but younger and sensitive viewers should avoid this one.
